How do I control my thinking?

Here are two questions for you.  Please send your answers to Joe Damal at joedamal@mciworld.html:
  1. What is a way that you use to control your thinking?
  2. When has that been useful, and when not?
Here are your answers!

Charles:  What is a true story where you controlled your mind? Once somebody tried to tell me that someone close to me would hurt me.  How did you control your mind?  I never let the negative implications steer me astray.

Al Rodgers: You have to have a goal. [Advice to youth, written down by Andrius Kulikauskas]

Al Rodgers: You got to have faith.  [Advice to youth, written down by Andrius Kulikauskas]

Meonka: Try not to go on a different subject. Every night I have homework and I try to focus on it, and not focus on everything else.  Works well. [Written down by Andrius kulikauskas]

Aretha: What is a true story where you controlled your mind? When my parents were dishonest with me.  How did you control your mind? I control my mind by ignoring.

Donielle: What is a true story where you controlled your mind? Doing good stuff instead of bad.  How did you control your mind? Mind power.

Marcus Van: Taking ten deep breaths.  Yesterday a kid hit me and I didn't hit him back.  Security came and the kid was suspended and I didn't get in trouble.  [written down by Andrius Kulikauskas]

Kentavious Canady: Studying.  Thinking.

Satrina Canady: Listening.

Desmind: Following directions, concentration, focus, putting things in my own words. [used this in chemistry to help him learn the elements].

Demetrius See: Practice.  I used to average a C+ in Social Studies.  After I cleared my mind and studied more I got an A.

Junior: The way I control my thinking is by not thinking about what I am trying to do. [...what I don't want my mind to think about.]  [Works very well.]

Ezekiel: I think of something positive, I think about the outcome.  At school I work hard and the outcome will be what I want it to be.  Works very well.  [written down by Andrius Kulikauskas]

Willie: Thinking about what's the right thing to do, the wrong thing to do.  Taking time out to chill out, five or ten minutes to think about what I should be doing. [written down by Andrius Kulikauskas]

Joe Damal: Exercise helps me control my thinking.  If I have a big project or something that requires a lot of thought I like to go running or ride my bike before I start.  This helps me meditate on the project and lets my brain begin from a relatively uncluttered state.

Joe Damal: Eating is important to thinking.  I always work better if I eat a good breakfast and then sensibly throughout the work session.  If I eat too much I feel sluggish or am overly preoccupied with my bowels.

Joe Damal: The environment I am in helps me control my thoughts.  I don't like it either too loud or too quiet.  I like to be able to move around a bit, up and away from my writing desk, an action that I often liken to eating crackers to cleanse the palate before tasting food.
